Government concerned over persistent gender inequality

 AYV News, May 14, 2026

Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi, has highlighted ongoing challenges affecting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Sierra Leone, particularly among vulnerable women and girls in rural communities.

Speaking during the weekly government press briefing,Dr. Mahoi disclosed that girls living in female-headed households and rural areas continue to face greater social and economic hardships compared to others.

She acknowledged that progress has been made in increasing women’s participation across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), but noted that leadership and decision-making opportunities for women remain limited.

According to the Minister, more deliberate efforts are needed to promote equal opportunities and strengthen women’s representation in leadership positions across both public and private institutions.

Dr. Mahoi emphasised that investing in women through education and economic empowerment has far-reaching benefits for families, communities, and national development.

She stated that empowering women not only improves household wellbeing but also contributes significantly to economic growth, social stability, and sustainable development across the country.

The Minister also called on parents and families to take a more active role in raising and protecting children, stressing that strong family support systems are essential in addressing many of the social challenges affecting young people.

She reaffirmed government’s commitment to advancing gender equality, protecting children’s rights, and promoting inclusive development policies that create opportunities for women and vulnerable groups nationwide.
