A high-level diplomatic ceremony was held in Freetown to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the European Union’s institutional presence in Sierra Leone, marking five decades of cooperation in governance, infrastructure development, human capital investment, and economic transformation.

The golden jubilee celebration brought together senior government officials, diplomats, civil society representatives, and development partners to reflect on the long-standing partnership between Sierra Leone and the European Union.

The relationship was formally established in 1976 with the opening of the EU Delegation office in Freetown under the ACP–EU framework. Over the years, the partnership has evolved from traditional development assistance into what officials described as a modern relationship based on mutual respect and shared priorities.

The ceremony highlighted the role of the European Union in supporting Sierra Leone through critical periods, including post-conflict reconstruction, institutional rebuilding, governance reforms, and socio-economic recovery efforts.

European entities were also recognised as among the country’s major investors and taxpayers, with operations spanning sectors such as aviation, renewable energy, construction, and telecommunications.

The event further showcased “Team Europe’s” ongoing support for Sierra Leone’s national development priorities, including sustainable agriculture, green energy, decentralisation, governance reforms, and youth empowerment initiatives.

Speaking during the ceremony, Pascal Richter, German Ambassador to Sierra Leone, described the relationship as one that extends beyond development assistance to include diplomatic cooperation, regional stability, and strong bilateral engagement.

He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment, as a member of the European Union, to aligning its support with Sierra Leone’s priorities in education, governance, and economic reform.

Also addressing the gathering, Aidan Fitzpatrick, Ambassador of Ireland to Sierra Leone, highlighted the grassroots impact of European support, particularly in areas such as human capital development, access to finance, gender equality, and institutional transparency.

He noted that European-supported initiatives continue to empower local communities and strengthen national development efforts.

The Head of the European Union Delegation to Sierra Leone, Manuel Alexander Müller, expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Sierra Leone for five decades of cooperation and partnership.

Ambassador Müller stated that future EU engagement under the “Team Europe” and “Global Gateway” initiatives will focus on promoting a green and inclusive economy, strengthening sustainable food systems, and expanding digital and vocational opportunities for young people.

The celebration concluded with a networking reception and cultural exhibition showcasing major milestones achieved throughout the 50-year partnership between Sierra Leone and the European Union.
