The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) and the Ministry of Sports have reaffirmed their commitment to revitalising tertiary-level sports through a strengthened partnership aimed at improving infrastructure, expanding sporting opportunities, and restoring inter-collegiate and inter-university competitions across the country.
The commitment was reached during a strategic meeting, which brought together senior officials from both ministries and representatives of the National Sports Authority (NSA) to discuss the future of sports development in higher education institutions.
The discussions focused on harnessing sports as a tool for youth empowerment, education, employment, talent development, and national development.
Representing the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Deputy Minister Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara underscored the importance of coordinated planning, increased investment in sports infrastructure, and the establishment of structured sporting programmes within tertiary institutions.
He also disclosed plans to develop a modern sports complex at Fourah Bay College as part of preparations for the institution’s bicentenary celebrations in 2027, describing the project as a major step toward promoting sporting excellence among students.
Minister of Sports Augusta James-Teima reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to restoring inter-varsity and inter-collegiate competitions, noting that education and sports are complementary sectors that play a vital role in nurturing young talent and producing future national athletes.
The National Sports Authority called for greater accountability in the management of sports funds and increased investment in sports programmes and facilities across universities and colleges.
The meeting concluded with a commitment by all stakeholders to develop a comprehensive roadmap for the revival of tertiary sports, to create more opportunities for young athletes, strengthen institutional sports programmes, and enhance Sierra Leone’s national sports development pathway.
