Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has called on citizens to embrace agriculture as a pathway to achieving food security, creating jobs, and strengthening the country’s economy.
The Deputy Minister made the appeal while sharing updates from his personal farm, where he disclosed that his cucumbers are ready for harvest, while his watermelons, corn, and peppers are progressing well.
Koroma said farming has become a regular part of his weekend activities, encouraging Sierra Leoneans to see agriculture not only as a source of food but also as a profitable business opportunity.
“Grow what you eat, eat what you grow, sell to those who can’t grow and get more resources. Let us go back to basics and move. Feed Salone will be a reality,” he stated.
His remarks reinforce the Government of Sierra Leone’s Feed Salone initiative, a flagship agricultural programme designed to increase domestic food production, reduce dependence on imported food, improve nutrition, and create sustainable livelihoods for citizens.
The Deputy Minister’s message comes at a time when the government continues to encourage public officials, private sector actors, and ordinary citizens to actively participate in farming as part of efforts to transform the agricultural sector and enhance national food security.
His decision to personally engage in farming has been widely viewed as leading by example, demonstrating that agriculture remains a viable and rewarding venture capable of contributing to both household income and national development.
