The Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Sierra Leone on Saturday commemorated Cuba’s National Rebellion Day, with a ceremony held at its headquarters on 58 Sir Samuel Lewis Road, Aberdeen, Freetown.
Speaking at the event, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Sierra Leone, Her Excellency Norma Sánchez Águila, highlighted the historical significance of the occasion, which is observed annually on July 26.
She explained that the day commemorates the July 26, 1953, attacks on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba and the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks in Bayamo. The attacks were led by Fidel Castro and a group of revolutionaries in an attempt to overthrow the government of Fulgencio Batista.
Although the operation was unsuccessful and many of the participants were either killed or captured, Ambassador Sánchez Águila noted that the events marked the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.
She recalled that Fidel Castro was imprisoned following the attacks but was later released. He subsequently returned to Cuba to continue the revolutionary struggle, which culminated in the overthrow of the Batista government on January 1, 1959.
According to the Ambassador, National Rebellion Day remains one of Cuba’s most significant national holidays and is commemorated each year with official government ceremonies and activities reflecting on the country’s revolutionary history.
She further noted that the historic date also inspired the name of the 26th of July Movement (Movimiento 26 de Julio), the revolutionary organization that played a central role in bringing Fidel Castro to power and shaping modern Cuba.
The ceremony in Freetown brought together invited guests to reflect on the enduring significance of the July 26 events and the longstanding relations between Cuba and Sierra Leone.
