Cuba accuses U.S. of “Unilateral Aggression” at UN Security Council Debate

AYV News, June 9, 2026

Cuba has strongly criticised the United States, describing its policies toward Havana as “unilateral aggression” and calling for greater international action to defend multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Speaking at a United Nations Security Council open debate on “Defending the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system centered on the UN” held in New York on May 26, 2026, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, delivered a forceful statement addressing global governance, international law, and U.S.–Cuba relations.

Rodríguez Parrilla praised the leadership of China in promoting multilateral cooperation and strengthening the UN system, while calling for reforms aimed at increasing fairness, transparency, and equality within global institutions.

He also referenced historical remarks by former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, emphasizing opposition to war and what he described as global inequality and domination by powerful states.

The Cuban foreign minister accused the United States of undermining international peace and security, alleging that its policies toward Cuba amount to collective punishment through long-standing economic restrictions.

He argued that the U.S. measures have had severe humanitarian and economic impacts on the Cuban population and described them as equivalent to a blockade, calling for an end to what he termed “cruel and indiscriminate sanctions.”

Rodríguez Parrilla further warned against military escalation and urged the international community to resist actions that could destabilize Cuba and the wider Latin American and Caribbean region.

He reaffirmed Cuba’s willingness to maintain dialogue with the United States on issues such as migration, counter-terrorism, and transnational crime, provided that such engagement respects Cuba’s sovereignty and internal affairs.

The minister concluded by calling on the United Nations and the broader international community to uphold international law, prevent conflict, and ensure respect for the sovereignty of all nations.
