China Medical Team Opens New Chapter in Medical Education at Njala University

By Marius Musa Kargbo

A new chapter in Sierra Leone–China health cooperation was written at Njala University this week as the 27th China Medical Team (CMT) delivered its first-ever public academic lecture to nursing students signaling a shift from purely clinical outreach to structured medical education and knowledge transfer.

The lecture, held at the College of Medical Sciences, School of Nursing & Midwifery, brought together hundreds of nursing students, faculty members, and senior health officials in an unusually interactive academic setting. The session was led by Dr. Gao Kelei, an Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) specialist with the 27th CMT, under the invitation and coordination of Dr. (Mrs) Angella M. George, Acting Dean of the School of Nursing & Midwifery.

What made the event notable was not only its content, but its purpose. The training focused on early detection and standardized nursing interventions for common ENT conditions areas critical to primary healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone. Dr. Gao broke down complex anatomical and clinical concepts into practical, step-by-step approaches tailored to the realities of resource-limited healthcare settings, where nurses often serve as the first point of contact for patients.

The lecture quickly moved beyond traditional classroom instruction. Students engaged actively in case-based discussions and clinical simulations, addressing scenarios such as airway obstruction, pediatric foreign body emergencies, and infection control protocols. The atmosphere, described by participants as “highly engaging and practical,” reflected a growing appetite among young health professionals for hands-on, applied medical learning.

The success of the session has already sparked discussions on deeper collaboration between the Chinese medical team and Njala University. In a post-lecture engagement, Dr. Gao and Dr. Angella M. George explored the possibility of establishing a structured partnership that could include regular public medical lectures, supervised clinical exposure for nursing students at the Sierra Leone–China Friendship Hospital, and expanded community-based medical outreach programs.

For the 27th China Medical Team, the initiative represents an important evolution in its mission in Sierra Leone. While direct patient care and medical outreach remain central, the growing emphasis on training and capacity building reflects a broader vision strengthening the country’s healthcare system by investing in its future workforce.

If sustained, the Njala University lecture series could mark the beginning of a long-term academic bridge between Chinese medical specialists and Sierra Leone’s nursing and medical education system one built not only on treatment, but on teaching, mentorship, and shared clinical knowledge.
