First Lady Fatima Maada Bio has announced a push for 27 November to be proclaimed the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, the First Lady said the proposed international day would create an annual global platform to renew political commitment, strengthen advocacy, raise awareness, promote accountability and accelerate action against child, early and forced marriage.

She said the initiative would help keep the issue high on the international agenda and strengthen collective efforts to protect girls from losing their childhood and future to forced marriage.
