The construction of highways throughout the region of the Western Balkans has been one of the most literally concrete and tangible signs of infrastructure development over the past two decades.

This is particularly so in and around Croatia, as a part of an effort to make it easier for tourists from throughout Europe to spend their summers and make investments in the Adriatic coast.

However, as everywhere, what a driver makes up for in time and convenience can often be accompanied by a speed and monotony that removes any sense of the geographical place through which one is traveling.

People who drive from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik on the route that passes through Foca, Gacko and Trebinje in Bosnia and Herzegovina are rewarded for their patience and driving skills by stunning landscapes and often forbidding terrain.
