A new production of Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly will premiere on Saturday, 16 May, on the Jovan Đorđević stage of the Serbian National Theatre (SNP) in Novi Sad, and this famous work will feature nearly 200 performers.
The Opera Orchestra, Choir, Ballet and Children’s Opera Studio will bring to life the timeless story of longing and betrayal, while also showcasing part of the rich performance tradition of the Serbian National Theatre.
Since its first performance at the Serbian National Theatre in 1921, Madama Butterfly has been seen by more than 80,000 spectators across six different productions and remains one of the favourite operas among the people of Novi Sad.
More than 800 metres of satin and brocade were used to create over 120 new costumes, and alongside the soloists, Choir and Ballet, more than 20 members of the Children’s Opera Studio are also taking part.
The new production is directed by Aleksandar Nikolić.
