A new Labour Law is currently being drafted which, according to the Ministry of Labour, will bring greater rights to parents and make it easier to balance work and family responsibilities.
The new Labour Law, as announced, will be more flexible regarding family needs. The Minister of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski, stated that the introduction of flexible working hours is being considered for parents of children with developmental difficulties, as well as for parents with several children.
“The employer should take all circumstances into account and allow someone to work shorter hours, to be paid less accordingly, but to be able to balance their career and family obligations,” said the Minister in an interview for Prva TV.
Đurđević Stamenkovski added that there is a possibility of extending maternity leave beyond its current duration, providing parents with greater support in the first months after the birth of their child.
The Minister also mentioned that she had a four-hour meeting with parents about the Parent-Caregiver Law, emphasising that the state wishes to provide concrete assistance to families. She added that mothers pointed out that some local governments are not offering sufficient support, even though budget funds have been allocated for that purpose.
