The newly built bridge over the railway in Mala Krsna near Smederevo will open to traffic today, August 20, at 10 a.m. The bridge will connect the Požarevac interchange and toll plaza with the already open section of the Požarevac–Veliko Gradište–Golubac expressway, known as the Danube Corridor.
The new two-kilometre route eliminates the need to detour through the village of Vranovo. The previous route crossed two railway crossings, which often caused traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours and the tourist season.
The opening of the bridge was announced by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in a video posted by “Corridors of Serbia”. The more direct connection to the expressway will shorten travel times, ease traffic on local village roads and improve the connection between the Braničevo District and the Belgrade-Niš motorway.
The Danube Corridor is around 68 kilometres long and designed for speeds of up to 100 km/h. Approximately 32 kilometres were opened in February 2025, including the 21-kilometre section from Mala Krsna and the Požarevac toll plaza to the city bypass, as well as the section from Veliko Gradište towards Golubac. The remaining 36 kilometres are under construction, with the entire route expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Part of the work is being carried out by a Chinese company, and the project includes dozens of bridges, overpasses, interchanges and roundabouts.
Once the corridor is completed, the journey from Belgrade to Požarevac will take between 45 and 55 minutes, while the journey to Golubac will take around one hour and 20 minutes. The faster connection is expected to boost tourism, particularly in the area around Golubac Fortress and the Danube, as well as economic activity and daily commuting.
