The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs, Milovan Drecun, stated today that he expects Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić will likely make a decision tomorrow to dissolve Parliament, following a reasoned proposal from the Serbian Government, and announce snap parliamentary elections.
Drecun noted that the minimum timeframe for calling elections is 45 days, and that, in line with statements by the President of the Republic and decisions made by the Main Board of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), the elections will likely take place on 25 October.
He clarified that following the dissolution of the Parliament, committee meetings will no longer be held.
“Several proposed agreements have arrived, as well as perhaps one draft bill, but following the elections, the new government will withdraw any proposals that might end up in parliament during this period. They will then be re-submitted to the National Assembly, either in their current form or revised. That would be standard procedure, and the legislative process will continue,” Drecun said.
When asked whether the government views the elections as a way out of the social and political crisis, Drecun stated that he does not believe a political crisis existed in the country, adding that such a crisis occurs when the government lacks a stable majority and solid support in parliament, or when it lacks the backing of the majority of citizens.
According to him, a certain social crisis does exist because, as he put it, a section of opposition parties and citizens wish to change the government at any cost. He recalled that attempts had been made on the streets to overturn the constitutional order, bring down the state, and forcibly change the government through undemocratic and unlawful means.
“Elections are therefore always the only possible solution – to allow the will of the citizens to be expressed at the ballot box and to see which direction we should move in next. These are indeed very significant elections. You have a Serbia that is, in a full geopolitical sense, at the peak of its strength and constantly moving forward; a country that is one of the fastest-growing economies, holds an exceptionally strong foreign policy position, serves as a factor of peace and regional stabilisation, delivers continuous economic progress, sees a steady improvement in living standards, and is strengthening its defence capacities,” Drecun said.
He expects a high turnout in the upcoming elections, adding that it is good for democracy when as many people as possible turn out to vote and when a wide range of political options compete in the race.
“There will certainly be numerous parties and coalitions taking part in the elections. The real question lies in the manifestos being offered and the methods of political action and expression – whether these fall within generally accepted democratic principles or whether they operate in a different manner that actually undermines democracy,” Drecun said.
