The Days of Catalan Film reach their fifth edition and, on this occasion, speak of Catalonia – its landscapes, poetry, personalities, the altruism of its society, and its history – through the creativity and perspective of Catalan filmmakers.
The festival opens on 24 October at 7 pm with the Oscar- and Goya-nominated documentary Balseros (Carles Bosch, Josep M. Domènech, 2002, 120′), which won awards at festivals in Havana and CPH:DOX and follows seven Cubans who set sail for the US coast in 1994, tracing their fates seven years later. The following day, on 25 October at 5 pm, the programme features Baruma (Daniela Clementi, 2026, 49′), the story of Marta, a humanitarian worker in Senegal who encounters a project dedicated to the most vulnerable communities, while her journey intertwines with questions concerning humanity and artificial intelligence.
That same evening, at 7 pm, a collection of documentary short films about the rise of fascism and Nazism in Europe in the 1930s and 1940s is screened across five stories: The Proclamation of the Catalan Republic, The Martyrdom of Catalonia, New Lives, Blood Transfusion, and Surviving Mauthausen. On the final day of the festival, 26 October at 7 pm, audiences will watch Canigó 1883 (Albert Naudín, 2023, 70′), a feature film based on real events that blends an adventurer’s Pyrenean chronicles with the intimate story of the poet Jacint Verdaguer, capturing the Pyrenees in the late 19th century.
The programme closes at 9 pm with La Monjos (Mireia Ros, 1996, 105′), nominated for the Goya Award for Best New Director, which revives the legend of a “mad” woman known as “La Monjos” or “The Woman with Hair Buns” through the story of two girls from working-class Barcelona in the 1930s.
This edition of the festival is especially marked by the arrival of guests Griselda Frey Fornés and Denis Fornés Gomis, film producers and representatives of the Baruma association, who will hold a Q&A session with the audience following the screening on 25 October at 5 pm.
