Twenty-seven years after hostilities ended, Kosovo will publish on Wednesday the first official list of victims of the 1998-99 war – dead and missing.
Based on physical files stretching hundreds of metres and more than 22 terabytes in digital form, the list compiled by the state Institute of Crimes Committed During the War in Kosovo, ICCW, runs to 13,190 names, but remains ‘preliminary’.
“For each victim, at least eight different sources of information were used before being included in this preliminary list, and I believe each case underwent thorough verification,” said Atdhe Hetemi, director of the institute.
“This is a preliminary institutional list and remains open to additions and revisions based on new documents and evidence.”
