The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) today signed an agreement to participate in the specialised exhibition Expo 2027 Belgrade.
CERN is one of the world’s most prominent scientific research institutions, and this exhibition marks its first appearance as an official international participant with its own dedicated pavilion, according to a press release. The agreement was signed by Jagoda Lazarević, Serbia’s Minister of Internal and Foreign Trade and Commissioner for Expo 2027 Belgrade; Danilo Jerinić, Director of EXPO 2027 Belgrade; and Ursula Bassler, CERN’s Section Commissioner for Expo 2027 Belgrade.
Bassler emphasised that it is a particular pleasure for the organisation she represents to take part in an Expo as an official participant for the first time, the statement noted. “For CERN, this is a great opportunity and a significant step forward. The theme ‘Play for Humanity’ is deeply aligned with what scientists do every single day,” she said.
In science, as she pointed out, “there is always an element of play, curiosity, and exploration that leads to new discoveries and innovations.” “That is precisely what we want to present to visitors through our pavilion,” Bassler added.
She noted that CERN’s exhibition will make complex scientific topics accessible to a broad audience and demonstrate how international cooperation, knowledge, and collective effort contribute to the development of humanity.
Lazarević highlighted that CERN’s participation represents major recognition for Serbia and confirms the importance of the Expo 2027 Belgrade specialised exhibition. She also stated that Serbia and CERN share long-standing, strong ties dating back to 1954, when the former Yugoslavia was one of the organisation’s founding nations. “Today, as a full member state of CERN, Serbia has its own researchers, scientists, engineers, and students participating as equals in the world’s most significant scientific projects,” Lazarević said.
She underlined that the CERN pavilion will “enable millions of visitors to discover the world of modern science in an accessible way and understand how crucial scientific discoveries are for the future.”
Jerinić noted that CERN’s involvement is one of the most significant steps in the preparations for the event. “For Expo 2027 Belgrade, this is far more than just adding another participant. CERN’s presence is strong validation that Belgrade will host institutions shaping the future of humanity,” Jerinić said.
He mentioned that for over seven decades, CERN has brought together the world’s top scientists in a shared mission to push the boundaries of human knowledge and develop technologies that are now part of everyday life.
According to him, the agreement signed today represents a strategic step for CERN, Serbia, and Expo 2027 alike.
The specialised exhibition Expo 2027 Belgrade will take place from 15 May to 15 August 2027, featuring over 140 countries, international organisations, and companies from around the globe. Under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All,” the 93-day exhibition will welcome millions of visitors and showcase the most innovative ideas, achievements, and solutions shaping the future.
