The Afro Festival, an event dedicated to African cultures in Serbia, will be held this weekend, on 20 and 21 June, at the Museum of African Art in Belgrade.
According to a statement, visitors can look forward to concerts, dance performances, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, guided tours of the museum’s collections, family programmes, and opportunities to meet artists, exhibitors and representatives from numerous African countries and the African diaspora over the two-day festival.
The musical highlight of this year’s festival will be a concert by the group Les Amazones d’Afrique, scheduled for Sunday, 21 June, at 2:00 p.m. in the museum grounds in Senjak.
Organisers describe the ensemble as a pan-African female collective bringing together artists from Mali, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Through a blend of traditional West African rhythms, hip-hop, trap and electronic music, the group delivers powerful messages of freedom, solidarity and women’s empowerment.
Throughout both days, visitors will also be able to explore the African Bazaar, a sales exhibition featuring artistic and handcrafted items from various parts of Africa. They will also have the opportunity to enjoy a rich selection of food inspired by the flavours of Africa, the Middle East and countries of the African diaspora.
A range of workshops for both children and adults has also been announced. Activities will include African headwrap tying, creating collages from recycled materials, learning about the symbolism of traditional Ghanaian kente textiles, playing the traditional game mancala, an Arabic calligraphy workshop, and the collaborative painting of a mural inspired by African wildlife.
The museum garden will showcase the best works from the 10th Impressions of Africa art competition, with awards presented to the most successful participants. The programme will also feature Music of Hope, an interactive musical event in which the audience actively participates through singing, movement and rhythm.
