What is really behind Aliou Sall’s release

According to exclusive information reported by the newspaper Libération, the mayor of Guédiawaye Aliou Sall and his wife were placed under strict judicial control following a tumultuous weekend marked by their return from the prosecutor’s office. After this judicial step, the couple was finally able to return to their home on Monday night.

According to Libération, Aliou Sall and his wife deposited the sum of 240 million CFA francs before being released on bail. The brother of former president Macky Sall was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering, corruption, and influence peddling, alleged offenses related to the amounts received from the company Sertem. The company’s managing director, Léopold Ngom, was also questioned by investigators before being released, the newspaper reports.

Regarding Aliou Sall’s wife, Libération indicates that she was charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and money laundering, charges similar to those leveled against her husband. The investigating judges considered that her situation also required a control measure, given her alleged involvement in the transactions under scrutiny.

Still according to Libération, this judicial control comes with two major restrictive measures. First, Aliou Sall and his wife are prohibited from leaving the national territory without prior authorization from the investigating judge. Secondly, they must sign in at the end of each month at the office of the president of the panel of investigating judges of the financial pool. This obligation aims to ensure their availability and to prevent any risk of flight or obstruction of the procedure.

The newspaper also points out that the financial prosecutor’s office could appeal this decision, as it had initially requested the couple to be remanded in custody unless a total amount of 572 million CFA francs was deposited. The investigating magistrates therefore opted for an intermediate formula, combining supervised release and substantial financial guarantees.

According to Libération, this case, which is part of the fight against corruption and money laundering, remains under close scrutiny. The next steps in the procedure could determine whether new charges or confrontations will be ordered by the judges of the Financial Judicial Pool.
