This country is a disgrace

American President Donald Trump has once again toughened his stance against Nigeria, accusing Abuja of not protecting the country’s Christian communities.

Invited on Friday on the Brian Kilmeade Show on Fox News Radio, the Republican leader made particularly harsh statements, describing the situation in the West African country as a “disgrace” and mentioning a “genocide” against Christians. “They are killing thousands of people. The government has done nothing. It is totally ineffective,” Trump declared, claiming that it took his intervention to draw attention to the issue.

The White House tenant then threatened to suspend American aid to Nigeria. “We give a lot of grants to Nigeria, which we will eventually stop,” he warned. This is not the first time Donald Trump has brandished such a threat: he had already mentioned a possible military intervention if Nigerian authorities did not act more against violence targeting Christians.

Abuja firmly rejects these accusations, described as “misleading narratives” by Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar. The government assures that there are no targeted “massacres” against Christians and denounces statements that could harm the country’s image. Authorities also point out that the violence in Nigeria affects various communities indiscriminately, whether they are Christian or Muslim.
