The tragedy occurred on a highway construction site between Quiliano and Altare, in the province of Savona, in northern Italy, where a 29-year-old Senegalese worker lost his life after falling approximately twenty meters from scaffolding. According to information reported by the newspaper Les Echos, the victim was working on the highway construction site on a viaduct when he had this dizzying fall, leading to immediate death despite the quick intervention of emergency services.
According to Les Echos, the 118 emergency teams, paramedics, the “Grifo” helicopter, and firefighters quickly intervened on the scene to try to revive the young worker, but all their efforts proved to be in vain. The Italian traffic police, the highway management company Autofiori, as well as technicians from the prevention and workplace safety service of ASL 2, moved to the site to make observations and open an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
The highway section connecting Altare to the A10 junction was temporarily closed to traffic to allow emergency services to act and investigators to collect initial evidence. This tragedy highlights, as emphasized by Les Echos, the permanent dangers faced by construction and public works workers, particularly when working at height or near heavily trafficked roads.
Falling from scaffolding remains one of the main causes of serious accidents and deaths in the construction sector. Investigators will need to verify if all safety measures were followed, including the wearing of personal protective equipment, the stability of equipment, staff training, and adequate supervision of the construction site. According to Les Echos, this fatal accident once again highlights the crucial importance of prevention and vigilance on construction sites to protect the lives of workers, who are often exposed to extreme risks in the course of their duties.
