Former Senegalese president Macky Sall is not staying silent in the face of accusations in the hidden debt case. According to L’Observateur of this Monday, he has officially requested the Ministry of Finance and Budget as well as the Court of Auditors to obtain all documents and raw data related to this matter.
“Our request aims to obtain documents and raw data,” explains Me Pierre-Olivier Sur, lawyer for the former head of state. The goal, according to him, is to allow international experts in public finances to analyze this information in order to determine “what is legally considered a debt and what is not.” Despite these steps taken “in an absolutely transparent and republican manner,” Macky Sall’s correspondences have so far gone unanswered.
Faced with this administrative silence, the former president is considering moving to a more aggressive phase. “In the absence of a response, we plan to formally demand the communication of the requested documents,” warns Me Sur. And he adds: “If this amicable approach remains unsuccessful, we do not exclude taking legal action or appealing to any competent judicial authority.”
For Macky Sall, this approach has a dual purpose. On one hand, it aims to uphold his rights, including the principle of adversarial proceedings and access to administrative documents. On the other hand, it seeks to shift the debate to a factual and legal ground, away from political controversies. “It is about moving away from assumptions and returning to the rigor of numbers and law,” concludes Me Pierre-Olivier Sur.
