to the newspaper Libération, the Senegalese delegation led by Cheikh Diba, Minister of Finance and Budget, met with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in Washington on Tuesday as part of ongoing discussions towards the conclusion of a new program between Senegal and the Bretton Woods institution.
As reported by Libération, this meeting “resulted in a convergence of views on the next steps, including holding a meeting of the Board of Directors in the next phase of the process, in order to address the misreporting and approve a new program.”
The services of Cheikh Diba, as cited by Libération, specify that “the discussions led to mutual commitments: once the technical discussions are finalized, Senegal and the IMF services will jointly move towards submitting the file to the Board of Directors.”
Furthermore, Libération adds, “a mission from the IMF services is expected in Dakar as early as next week to finalize the work already started in Washington.” This visit marks a decisive step in the financial cooperation between Senegal and the international institution. The Senegalese delegation also wanted to “acknowledge the posture and messages of the Managing Director, Ms. Georgieva, in her recent statement following the last informal meeting of the Board of Directors held on October 3, 2025.”
According to Libération, both parties have committed to opening a new chapter in the partnership between Senegal and the IMF, based on transparency, trust, and respect for mutual commitments. The statement from the Ministry of Finance and Budget, as cited by Libération, concludes that “discussions continue in a climate of trust, with the objective of reaching an agreement beneficial for Senegal and in line with the requirements of good financial governance advocated by the IMF.”
