THE CONTROLLED TONGUE
Proverbs 21:23 “Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.”
Proverbs consistently reminds us that what we say is powerful and that misused words can lead to destruction. This verse emphasises a profound truth: wisdom is often revealed in what we choose NOT to say.
In a world quick to react and slow to listen, the practice of guarding our words can be challenging. Yet, holding back a harsh comment or resisting the urge to gossip is not a sign of weakness, but of strength under control. Like a rudder that steers a ship, our tongues influence our circumstances. Restraint in speech can be a safeguard, preventing arguments, misunderstandings, and deep wounds
Jesus said that out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). If our hearts are submitted to Him, our words will reflect His grace, patience, and truth. By guarding our tongues, we not only avoid calamity but also become instruments of peace and encouragement in the lives of others.
Prayer:
Father, I confess that my words don’t always honour You. Teach me to pause before I speak and to let Your Spirit and Your Word guide my tongue. Give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to be silent. May my words bring healing, hope, and truth, and may they always reflect Your love. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
