Payne Haas in doubt for Rugby League World Cup

Samoa international Payne Haas is in doubt for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup after Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire confirmed the star prop will require surgery on a finger injury during the post-season.

Haas has been playing through the issue since at least Round 2, when strapping was first spotted around his left ring finger. The strapping has appeared on and off throughout the season, while the finger has looked increasingly swollen in recent weeks.

Maguire confirmed Haas will need surgery, raising questions over whether he will be fit to represent Samoa at the World Cup.

However, the final decision will rest with Haas, with Maguire indicating the prop will have to weigh up his desire to represent Samoa against the need to get his hand fully right ahead of the Rabbitohs’ 2027 pre-season.

Haas remains one of Samoa’s most important players, and his potential absence would be a major blow to the Toa Samoa forward pack.

With the World Cup approaching, Haas now faces a difficult decision between answering the call for Samoa and prioritising his recovery ahead of the 2027 NRL season.
