National Bank of Samoa present $50,000 towards Weightlifting World Cup Preparations

The National Bank of Samoa has once again stepped forward to support Team Samoa Weightlifting, presenting a $50,000 tala contribution towards preparations for the 2026 Weightlifting World Cup.

The Chief Financial Officer. afioga Peseta Peter Tone, presented the cheque on behalf of the National Bank of Samoa in a ceremony attended by the bank’s management and staff.

“This support reflects NBS’s commitment not only to sports development, but also to backing Samoan athletes as they prepare for major international events,” said Peseta.

President of the Samoa Weightlifting Federation, Tuaopepe Asiata Jerry Wallwork, thanked NBS for its continued trust and support of the national weightlifting team.

He noted that this partnership has been built over many years, with NBS becoming one of the strong foundations behind Team Samoa Weightlifting’s ongoing efforts.

“Ua le tasi, ua le lua ae lasi le tatou mafutaga nei, ma le tatou faigapaaga.”

This year is a significant one for Samoa, as the country prepares to host the Weightlifting World Cup for the first time.

Tuaopepe Asiata Jerry Wallwork, President of SASNOC, President of Samoa Weightlifting, Member of International Weightlifting Federation Council, Coach of Samoa’s Weightlifting Team.

Samoa has been officially confirmed as the host nation for the 2026 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup, to be held from 23 April to 2 May 2026.

Tuaopepe confirmed that 78 countries have already committed to attending the event. It will be the first time a Pacific nation would host such a major event in the sport.

Tuaopepe says they hope to involve the community with each participating country to be “adopted” by a Samoan village, “allowing athletes and visitors to immerse themselves in the true essence of Samoan life – its traditions, food, music, and community spirit..”

“This is more than just a sporting event,” said Tuaopepe “It’s a chance for Samoa to once again showcase itself to the world and establish itself as a true sporting hub in the world, with sports tourism as a flow on benefit..”

NBS’s renewed support this year provides strong encouragement for the athletes and officials as Samoa gears up to host this major international sporting event that will place the country on the global stage.
