The Land Transport Authority have issued a public notice of two separate incidents where trucks has veered off Cross Island Road on Wednesday 17 September 2025.
Both vehicles were trucks, and both steered off the road between the stretch from Tiavi to Siumu.
Both incidents involved trucks transporting construction material, LTA confirms in their statement.
“The first truck veered off the road and overturned, resulting in a spillage of a load of rocks—onto one of the lanes.
“. This caused temporary obstruction and required cleanup by our response teams,” reads the statement.
The second truck also veered off the road in a separate incident, tragically killing the driver.
LTA extende their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected.
According to LTA, the second accident occurred along a newly completed 4-kilometres section of Cross Island Road “engineered for safety, durability, and smoother travel.”
LTA reminds the public that smooth roads are not speed zones.
“Let this tragedy be a solemn reminder: no upgrade replaces the need for caution, respect, and responsibility behind the wheel.”
LTA also clarified that the trucks carrying construction material, ” are not affiliated with any LTA contracted company”.
“LTA remains committed to ensuring that all construction activities under its purview are conducted safely and responsibly by its contractors.”
