A 34 year old father has been announced the winner of the 64th Independence logo and theme competition. Jack Olaf Lafoai’s design was selected from 11 submissions.
The winning logo and theme earned Lafoai the prize money of $3,000 tala.
The design winner is from Utualii and Patitu, Saleimoa, and works at the Signs Studio as a craft designer.
According to Jack Lafoai, he had spent a day and a half putting the design together, with the full finishing and detailing work taking about a week.
Jack expressed his gratitude to the Independence Committee for choosing his logo and theme for this year’s Independence celebrations.
“Faafetai mo le filifilia o lo’u nei tagata, e avea ma se tagata tusi ata, mo le faamanutaina o le tatou Tutoatasi o lenei tausaga..”
Acting Prime Minister, Hon Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molioo said the design reflects Samoa’s journey since independence in 1962, showing the importance of Democracy, Christian Faith, and Culture.
“Our journey since 1962 reminds us of God’s faithfulness and grace upon our nation.”
The Deputy Prime Minister said, the theme for this year’s celebration is, “United for a New Beginning.”

“And this theme reminds us that unity is our strength, and we can overcome challenges and move forward together with confidence and hope.”
“It also honours the sacrifices of our forefathers, who dreamed of a free and democratic Samoa where future generations can live with dignity and purpose.”
Description of the Logo
1. It reflects Samoa’s journey, symbolised by the sail of a canoe, a voyage that has travelled thousands of miles across the ocean and has reached the shores of Samoa, a blessed nation founded on true Christian faith and values.
2. The colours used represent those of our national flag: red, white, and blue.
3. The tanoa (kava bowl), ipu tau‘ava (cup), fue (fly whisk), and to‘oto‘o (staff) symbolise our authentic Samoan culture.
4. The design also presents the traditional Samoan tattoo of the soga‘imiti and the malu. The black colour incorporated represents the ink or dignity of our traditional tattoo and the visible identity of Samoa’s cherished cultural heritage.
