Senior citizens from across the territory packed the Methodist Hall in Ottoville Tuesday morning as guests of honor at the annual TAOA Christmas Program.
Penaia Fa’ali’i of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints offered prayers to thank God for His protection on the elderly mothers and fathers and government leaders.
Attending their first TAOA Christmas Program as leaders of the executive branch, Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula and Lt Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. delivered remarks.
The Governor said he was overcome with emotion to see all the elderly mothers and fathers present and acknowledged that they are the source of blessings for the territory through their prayers and teachings. He said people often refer to the Governor and First Lady as the father and mother of the territory but in his view they are the true mothers and fathers of American Samoa.
Seven elderly citizens between the ages of 90 and 101 were recognized and presented special gifts.

Lt Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. told the senior citizens that the key to long life is not to stress about faalavelave but to be happy. He said he wants to live to the ripe old age of 105, beating the age of his late grandmother who was 104 when she passed away.
He also encouraged them not to hold back on advice for the Governor and himself.
Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean and Mrs Fruean and House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale and Mrs Ale were present.
All of the elderly mothers and fathers were served a meal before gift bags and presents prepared by government departments, agencies and the authorities were distributed.
The choir from the Department of Human and Social Services entertained along with the Silver Band.
