By: Jasmine Netzler-Iose Cabinet has approved the lease of 260 acres of land at the Tuanaimato sports complex to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt revealed last week Friday at his weekly press conference.
He said the initiative is something that government feels is the best way forward for the development of sports in the country.
The Tuanaimato complex houses the majority of the country’s sports stadiums and fields and was previously under the management of the Samoa Sports Facility Authority.
The facilities were previously under the care of the Samoa Sports Facility Authority (S.S.F.A.) which eventually merged with the Sports Division of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture and the recreational parks formerly under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (M.N.R.E.) to form the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
The Prime Minister however made it clear that the land continues to be registered under the Ministry of Lands and Survey.
A Ministry established last year to address the challenges in managing government lands under different offices with different requirements.
The ministry encompasses the Land Survey Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (M.N.R.E.), Samoa Trust Estates Corporation (S.T.E.C.) and Samoa Land Corporation (S.L.C.).
According to the Prime Minister leasing these lands to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation will solve the problem some of the problems of faced by sporting bodies requiring land for the development of their sport activities.
Especially since previously the sporting facilities were under one government body and sports under another Ministry.
As a result, the lands will not be handed over to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to do what they see fit for their use.
And also, this means all these facilities can easily be accessed just by visiting the Ministry of Sports and Recreation without any problems faced earlier of going from one office to another just to enquire.
