Instead of being confined to their classrooms writing notes and taking tests, the students of North Union Secondary school (NUSS), created modern and ancestral cuisines on Friday, October 17, 2025, during a cook-off in celebration of World Food Day.

Inspired by the celebration’s global theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”, NUSS hosted their own festivities on the school’s compound under the theme, ‘Savour the Journey: from Ancestral to Modern Cuisine’.

Principal, Sherene Wilkinson told SEARCHLIGHT that the students are always very excited about this activity as it brings them together.

“ If it’s one day that you know the students are going to be here, it is on this day. They love to prepare food. They love to cook, and therefore this activity really touches them and it is a part of them. Yesterday, a number of students, I was told, went fishing, some went hunting…so they can get the different ingredients to prepare for today’s activity.”

Head of the Technical Department at NUSS Fay-ann Caesar told SEARCHLIGHT that students and teachers from 17 classes created ancestral and/or modern dishes using home grown ingredients.
