Independence, republic celebrations scaled back as PM prioritises ‘cost relief’

Prime Minister Mia Mottley has announced that Barbados will reduce the scale of its upcoming national celebrations to better manage the country’s financial resources during a period of global economic instability.

By shortening the festivities for independence and the anniversary of the republic, the government aims to subsidize fuel costs and protect citizens from rising inflation.

Beyond fiscal measures, the administration is advancing a new constitution through public dialogue and introducing legislation to improve national healthcare and pharmaceutical production.

Mottley also emphasized the importance of environmental pragmatism, advocating for natural gas as a temporary energy solution while demanding strict methane-free standards from partners.

The Prime Minister called for increased volunteerism to support the island’s youth and foster community resilience during these challenging times.
