Young man shot dead in La Panse

A young man was shot and killed in the community of La Panse, Castries, on Monday night, prompting concern among residents already uneasy about rising violence.

Emergency responders from the Saint Lucia Fire Service reported that the victim presented “obvious signs of death with penetrating wounds to the head and torso”.

The shooting is believed to have occurred sometime between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. When paramedics arrived, the body of the young male was found lying in a supine position on the ground beneath a mango tree.

Up to the time of publication, the identity of the deceased had not been officially confirmed.

Residents of the area expressed shock and grief over the incident.

“At my age of 57 years, I didn’t grow up in that; them kind of killing ting, I eh [not] supporting that. That’s very bad,” one resident told St. Lucia Times.

The resident also spoke about the growing sense of fear many people feel as violent incidents continue to occur across the island.

“You cannot feel safe, even {in the} daytime you don’t feel safe,” he said.

Although the shooting took place in La Panse, several residents told St. Lucia Times they believe the incident may have originated in a neighbouring community. They suggested the victim was attempting to escape through La Panse when he was shot.

“It’s probably linked to something on the other side,” one resident said.
