Island Champs resumed on Monday, March 17, with Day 4 action at the Saint Lucia Sports Academy, where the spotlight fell on throwing events. Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School (VFCSS) wasted no time making their mark, winning four of six gold medals on the opening day of field events.

The Island Champs continued Tuesday with long jump, triple jump and discus across divisions, before track semifinals shift to the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Wednesday and finals on Sunday. 

But for VFCSS, Day One already set the tone, with Eavan Edgar, 15, leading an exceptional day in the discus throw. Edgar threw 45.13m to win the Under-16 boys’ event, surpassing the CARIFTA qualifying standard of 44m and setting a new personal best. Teammate Renard Bernard finished close behind for silver.

Already qualified for CARIFTA in her pet event, the Under-17 long jump, Barbara-Marie Maximin added another gold medal to her personal collection, and added points to the Beanefield Comprehensive tally by winning the Under-18 discus throw, one of only two discus throw golds not claimed by VFCSS, though her throw of 25.50m ensured that the title went down south. The other discus throw winners were as follows: 

Darvin Forde of Sir Arthur Lewis Community College fell short of the CARIFTA qualifying mark in the triple jump open, clearing 14.10m, ahead of Kanil Nelson from St Mary’s College. Forde was half a metre off the mark. 

Forde also won the long jump with a clearance of 6.39m, ahead of Babonneau’s Hubert. Nelson, meanwhile, cleared 6.25m to take Under-18 gold for SMC. High jump specialist Randall Monroe of SLSA went over 6.16m to grab Under-16 long jump gold. And Choiseul’s Christiano Nestor cut the sand at 5.27m to dominate the Under-14 division.
