Prime Minister Pierre Announces August 1 Start of EC$ 1,000 Newborn Grant

.

Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre has announced that the Government’s Newborn Grants Programme will take effect on August 1, 2026, fulfilling a commitment made in the 2026/2027 Budget.

Under the programme, mothers of eligible registered newborns will receive a one-time grant of EC$1,000.

To qualify, the child must be born on or after August 1, 2026, and the birth must be registered within six months of the child’s date of birth. Both requirements must be met.

The process begins at the Civil Status Registry, where the child’s birth must be registered and a birth certificate obtained. The Registry will verify the child’s date of birth and registration date to determine whether the mother qualifies for the grant.

Once eligibility has been confirmed, the Civil Status Registry will provide the mother with an Eligibility Confirmation Letter. The mother must take this letter, along with the required identification and supporting documents, to the Ministry of Finance.

The Ministry of Finance will process the payment and notify the mother when the EC$1,000 grant is ready for collection at the Treasury Department.

The Newborn Grant is intended to help mothers meet some of the immediate expenses associated with caring for a baby. It will also encourage timely birth registration, which gives every child a legal identity and is necessary for accessing public services and official documents.

The programme, according to the Office of the Prime Minister {}OPM}, forms part of the Government’s continued effort to provide practical support to families at important stages of their children’s lives.
