Flambeau Says Full Steam Ahead

Hundreds gathered in Cul de Sac Sunday as Allan Chastanet, Guy Joseph and a large portion of the United Workers Party (UWP) slate of candidates rallied their base as election campaigning approaches fever pitch.

The crowd thickened towards the later part of the afternoon, shuttling from various constituencies amidst the threat of heavy rainfall.

UWP hopeful Leo Titus Preville, endorsed to contest the Babonneau seat, wasted no time in taking sharp aim at his St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) opponent John Paul Estaphane, who was being launched that very time on the grounds of Caribbean Cinemas.

Preville stressed that the biggest indicator that all was not well with the SLP in Babonneau was the introduction of a new SLP candidate ahead of the next general elections. He was also sure that the constituents were ready to give him the required endorsement. “The people have seen over the last four and a half years the type of representative they got from the St. Lucia Labour Party in the person of Dr. Poyotte, the current parliamentary rep.” He went on, “every time Babonneau is represented by a Labour Party person, the community stagnates, it does not move forward. So the people have had the benefit of history and now they understand clearly that the future cannot be about doing the same things they have done before.”

Babonneau is one of the largest of the 17 constituencies with a very diverse demographic.

Another newcomer to the political arena, Peter Chiquot believes that while many see his challenge for the Castries East seat as a daunting task the burning issues in that constituency makes a UWP win a very likely possibility. “I think we have a serious problem with crime, we have a serious problem with poverty, we have a serious problem with health care and housing and I think these are the burning issues that really impact the residents of Castries East and I think as a result they are looking for better for themselves and that will very well be the reason why we will see a change in Castries East.”

.

Chiquot says He was initially not interested in being actively involved on the political arena however calls from family members and young constituents of Castries East pushed him to want to serve. A former Acting Comptroller of the Customs and Excise Department, Peter Chiquot hail from the Rockhall community in Castries East.

No sitting prime minister has lost his seat in almost 30 years.
