Donavan ‘Gusto’ Phillip hits 4 in big Wolfpack win

The North Carolina State University men’s football team, led by Saint Lucian forward Donavan Gusto Phillip, are very much on a roll, earning their sixth win in seven games on September 16, a massive 7-0 defeat of William & Mary. Phillip scored four goals, also known as a haul, in less than half an hour.

Playing at home in Raleigh, Phillip got his first goal inside three minutes, a signature towering header. The junior from Marchand got his second in the 20th, his third in the 27th, and his fourth in the 28th minute. That put the Wolfpack up 4-0 at the interval. Two goals from Max Ogawa and one from Caden Tolentino in the second half concluded the rout for the home team. For Phillip, he now has 10 goals in just seven games this season, becoming the Pack’s first double-digit goal scorer since 2011.

It was a big day for the NC State men’s programme, as the team jumped up from No. 5 to No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, marking a new programme-best, for the second time this season. The Wolfpack’s climb comes after a phenomenal 5-0-1 start to the season, the program’s best start since 1992. NC State opened the year ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll.

The Wolfpack’s first major test of the season will come over the next two weeks, as they embark on a three-match road trip. After opening the year with seven straight home games in Raleigh, NC State will now look to prove itself away from home with opportunities against Boston College, Pittsburgh, and UNC-Wilmington.
