Saint Lucia’s top junior rider is on his way to Rwanda for the UCI Road World Championships. The African continent will host the world’s top riders for the first time, with the Rwandan capital, Kigali, providing the stage for a historic week of racing.
Denver Alphonse Jr will be hoping for an improved experience from his last two races, in Canada and Barbados. In July, he was forced out of contention with hypothermia and ended last month’s Caribbean Junior Championships prematurely, a victim of food poisoning.
“Live to fight another day,” he said after his much-anticipated Barbados trip. “I am moving forward because I had no control over the situation… I was prepared for this event. I am a bit disappointed, but every setback is a setup for a comeback.”
Since his return from Barbados, the 18-year-old from La Caye, Dennery has been working harder than ever to prepare for Rwanda. Earlier this year, the Entrepot Secondary School graduate enjoyed success in several local races, as well as events in Martinique.
The talented cyclist is making his way to the Great Rift Valley of East Africa by way of France, having departed Saint Lucia on Thursday. Upon arrival in “the land of a thousand hills” on Sunday, he will seek to acclimatise before the biggest challenge of his life begins next Tuesday.
First up will be the 22-kilometre time trial taking place on September 23, followed by a 119km road race on Friday, September 26.
