Qatar reaffirms support for Lebanon, dispatches aid plane – Doha News

Qatar reaffirmed its support for Lebanon and dispatched a medical aid plane to Beirut as Israeli strikes continue across the country.

Qatar has dispatched a plane carrying medical aid to Beirut, expected to arrive on Friday, Lebanon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Youssef Raggi, said following a phone call with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Al Khulaifi.

During the call, Al Khulaifi renewed Qatar’s condemnation of the series of Israeli air strikes targeting multiple areas across Lebanon and reaffirmed its full solidarity with Lebanon in efforts to preserve its security and stability, according to a statement from Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He also stressed that Qatar “remains committed to supporting the Lebanese people during this extremely difficult phase”.

In a post on X, Raggi said Al Khulaifi informed him that the aid flight had already been dispatched and would arrive the same day.

“During the call, he informed me that Qatar has sent a plane carrying medical aid that will arrive in Beirut today, and that it is continuing its support for the Lebanese people during this extremely difficult phase,” Raggi said.

He expressed appreciation to Qatar for what he described as a “noble humanitarian initiative” and its continued support.

“I assured him that Lebanon is counting on friendly countries in its efforts to halt the Israeli escalation, and to support the Lebanese state in implementing its decisions aimed at extending its full sovereignty and confining arms to the hands of legitimate forces across all Lebanese territories,” Raggi added.

The shipment comes five days after Qatar Charity, the Qatar Red Crescent Society and the Qatar Fund for Development provided aid to displaced people in the southern city of Sidon.

The package included 500 relief kits distributed to displaced families as part of a wider programme targeting 40,500 families.

Since 2 March, air strikes across Lebanon have killed at least 1,530 people and displaced more than 1.1 million.

Israel launched one of its heaviest waves of attacks on 8 April, striking more than 100 locations within ten minutes, killing over 300 people and wounding more than 1,000, including children, elderly and women.

The escalation followed a two-week ceasefire announced by the United States and Iran on 8 April, brokered by Pakistan, but Israel refused to include Lebanon, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating within hours of the announcement that Lebanon was excluded and that Israeli attacks there would continue.

Israeli and Lebanese media reported on Thursday that Lebanon and Israel were preparing to enter direct negotiations, with a preliminary meeting expected next week in Washington.

Netanyahu said he had instructed his cabinet to begin direct talks with Lebanon “as soon as possible”, adding that discussions would focus on Hezbollah’s disarmament and the establishment of “peaceful relations”.

Israel is insisting that negotiations take place while military attacks continue and has ruled out any withdrawal from southern Lebanon before Hezbollah is disarmed.

Lebanon, meanwhile, is demanding at least a temporary ceasefire before formal negotiations begin and is pushing for a framework similar to the truce brokered between the United States and Iran, with a parallel track for Lebanon.
