With plans to surpass 30 hotels in operation across the country by 2030, the Group is investing in new projects in Lisbon, Porto, Algarve, and Madeira — each designed to align with the best environmental practices and promote authentic tourism experiences.
Building a Sustainable Future in Hospitality
Sustainability has become a defining pillar for Mercan Properties’ strategy in Portugal. The Group integrates the most advanced and up-to-date technologies in energy and water efficiency across all hospitality projects it develops.
A key example of this commitment is the Renaissance Porto Lapa Hotel, inaugurated in 2023, which became the first Portuguese hotel to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification, and the 8th hotel globally to do so. Beyond its environmental performance, the project played a significant role in revitalizing Porto’s Lapa area, demonstrating how Mercan’s development can contribute to both local communities and sustainability goals. As part of this initiative, Mercan also transformed 17,000 m² of previously underutilized land into the Urban Park Dr. Mário Soares — a green space featuring native species, restored streams and lakes that regenerate habitats and enhance community well-being, further complementing the hotel’s sustainable design.
According to Hugo Padrão, Director of Sustainability, “Mercan is committed to building Portugal’s greenest hotel portfolio, with the widest set of assets under internationally recognized sustainability standards such as LEED or BREEAM,” and Mercan is actively working to achieve that target across its expanding portfolio.
Sustainability Beyond the Blueprint
Sustainability at Mercan Properties goes beyond certifications and architectural planning — it is an ongoing commitment embedded into the day-to-day operations of its hotels and partners. While projects such as the Renaissance Porto Lapa Hotel reflect high standards of sustainable construction, Mercan believes that responsible hospitality truly begins once the doors open.
This commitment is carried out through practical actions that promote long-term environmental and social value. Teams are continuously encouraged to lead initiatives, raise environmental awareness, and drive ongoing improvement across all operations.
In the food and beverage areas, hotels prioritize local and seasonal ingredients, reducing transport distances and contributing to lower emissions while supporting regional producers. Waste and energy management are also key priorities. Measures such as zero-stock policies, menu planning to minimize food waste, and replacing disposable items like paper towels with washable alternatives are implemented to ensure responsible use of resources. Each decision reflects a conscious effort to inspire guests, empower communities, and contribute to transforming how the hospitality industry approaches sustainability in Portugal.
Responsible Growth with Regional Impact
Mercan Properties’ approach extends beyond environmental considerations. Each development seeks to reflect the cultural identity and local character of its region, integrating architecture, landscape, and community values in ways that promote regional development and authentic tourism. From Amarante to, Porto, Gaia and Lisbon, Évora, Beja and more recently, Santo André, the Group’s developments are designed to complement their surroundings while adding long-term value to local economies.
“Our Construction and Development team is always on the lookout for new locations with potential to develop sustainable and regional tourism, whether for leisure or business,” says Hugo Padrão, Director of Sustainability.
Aligning with Global Brands and Local Authenticity
Strategic partnerships also play a central role in maintaining quality and sustainability standards. Collaborations with internationally recognized hospitality brands such as ensure that each development upholds global benchmarks while fostering authentic, locally inspired experiences.
“Travelers today are increasingly seeking an authentic experience, aligned with sustainable responsibility,” notes Mercan Properties Director of Sustainability. “We want our hotels to offer excellent comfort and enable a truly local experience — one that integrates with the cultural and natural context.”
A Long-Term Vision for Portugal
Since its arrival in Portugal, Mercan Properties has built a strong track record in hospitality development, becoming one of the country’s key players in hospitality development through international investment. As it looks to the future, the Group aims to expand its presence nationwide while consolidating its sustainable approach to business.
“Portugal continues to gather all the conditions to be a top destination for tourism. We believe the country will maintain a positive trajectory, and we want to continue to contribute by developing projects that are both transformative and sustainable”, highlights Hugo Padrão.
