According to Eurostat data, the number of single-person households in Europe has increased by almost 17% in the last decade, compared to a 5.8% growth in the total number of households. This evolution is also reflected in tourism, with more and more people choosing to take vacations alone. On social media, the phenomenon is equally evident, with the hashtag #solotravel having more than 11 million posts on Instagram and almost 2 million on TikTok, demonstrating that traveling alone has become an experience shared by millions around the world, according to a report by Publituris.
In this context, TUI Musement, a specialist in tours and activities, analysed reviews from solo travellers to identify the best destinations, according to the ratings of those traveling alone, taking into account safety, cultural heritage, local nature, and opportunities for self-discovery and interaction with other travellers.
In this ranking, Lisbon appears in second place. Regarding the Portuguese capital, TUI Musement writes that it “enchants travellers with its historic centre, from Alfama to Praça do Comércio, with its viewpoints offering breath-taking views of the city, and its proximity to unique towns such as Sintra, Cascais, and Oeiras. Here, it is possible to explore the city at each traveller’s own pace, with a pleasant walk or by taking small excursions.”
The ranking is led by Liverpool (United Kingdom), which obtained an average score of 9.68 out of 10, compared to Lisbon’s 9.03 points.
Following in the rankings are Bangkok (Thailand – 9.02 points), Vienna (Austria – 9 points), Krabi (Thailand – 8.97 points), Carpathians (Greece – 8.96 points), Bali (Indonesia – 8.93 points), Barcelona (Spain – 8.87 points), Khao Lak (Thailand – 8.86 points) and London (United Kingdom – 8.85 points).
