Canada to develop national men’s health strategy targeting stigma

Health Canada aims to reduce stigma, challenge harmful stereotypes and encourage men to seek support earlier. Experts say traditional ideas of masculinity contribute to higher rates of suicide, substance abuse and preventable deaths among men.

Experts say online “manosphere” communities often reinforce harmful ideas linking masculinity with emotional suppression and self-reliance, discouraging men from seeking help. Researchers argue that reframing masculinity around caring for family and maintaining good health could improve outcomes. The federal strategy is expected later this year and will include measures promoting earlier engagement with health-care services.
