The Sejm lifted the parliamentary immunity of Law and Justice (PiS) MP Zbigniew Ziobro in relation to all 26 charges that the National Prosecutor’s Office (PK) intends to bring against him. In addition, the parliamentary majority opened the way for the detention and arrest of the former Minister of Justice.
Shortly after the vote, the politician gave his first statement on TV Republika. Speaking live from Budapest, he said:
“The truth is what matters most. It’s very good that this happened. A blatant political setup has been exposed. A few days ago, Donald Tusk wrote that there would be an arrest. He wrote ‘arrest’—period. For the past many months, first Adam Bodnar and now Waldemar Żurek have been taking over the judiciary on political orders—first the prosecution, then the courts, both illegally.”
“The truth will defend itself. I stand symbolically under the monument of U.S. President Ronald Reagan. It is a symbol of perseverance, strength, determination, and freedom. That freedom will come to Poland in due time,” he declared.
He also stated that “all those who are destroying the Polish state […] will one day be held accountable.” Ziobro added, “I thank you for all words of solidarity. I thank all those who do not believe these false accusations,” addressing his supporters.
He also appealed to the right side of the political spectrum, saying, “There are differences of opinion among us, but we must look toward Poland’s future.”
When asked whether he would seek political asylum in Hungary, he replied:
“Whether I will appear in Poland tomorrow, the day after, or later… we shall see. Forgive me, but not only friendly people are listening to us.”
