The Tusk government plans to reopen border crossings with Belarus. “A gift for the Lukashenko regime!”

Lithuania plans to decide on closing its border with Belarus for a month. In contrast, Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday that his government is considering reopening two border crossings with Lukashenko’s country. Voices of opposition are emerging online.

Lithuania is in talks with Poland about closing the border with Belarus, arguing that joint action would be more effective, said Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys on Wednesday. The Ministry of the Interior announced it would propose closing the border with Belarus for one month.

“Regional cooperation between countries in taking such measures gives them additional weight and significantly increases their effectiveness. That is why we are trying to coordinate our actions with our neighbors and are also holding talks with Poland. I hope we will succeed in doing so,” said Budrys.

In discussions with the Polish side, “we are presenting the circumstances, explaining the reasons for our actions and what we are experiencing here, and expressing the view that a much greater effect could be achieved if we synchronized these measures, or at least ensured that they do not go in opposite directions,” added the foreign minister.

Will Vilnius and Warsaw reach an agreement?

Budrys’s comments came in connection with the Lithuanian government’s plans to decide at its Wednesday meeting on closing the border with Belarus. Interior Minister Władysław Kondratowicz said on Wednesday that his ministry would propose closing the border for one month.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday that by November the government would be ready to reopen two border crossings with Belarus in the Podlaskie Voivodeship: Bobrowniki and Kuźnica. He stated that the reopening would be “on a trial basis,” after consultations with Lithuania.

Lithuania has been struggling with incidents involving meteorological and smuggling balloons that have entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus. Because of these objects, Vilnius Airport has been closed four times in one week, affecting more than 20,000 passengers and over 140 flights.

In response, Lithuania decided to close its land border crossings with Belarus indefinitely.

“A gift for the Lukashenko regime”

Mariusz Kamiński, the former Minister of the Interior and Administration at the time when the decision was made to close the Poland-Belarus border crossings, commented on Tusk’s statement on social media.

A GIFT FROM TUSK’S TEAM TO THE LUKASHENKO REGIME! Mr. Tusk, you announced that you would reopen the border crossings with Belarus as early as November. The closure of the Kuźnica crossing in 2021 was a response to Belarusian provocations linked to illegal migration. The closure of the Bobrowniki crossing took place the day after Andrzej Poczobut was sentenced to eight years in prison. Provocations on the Belarusian border continue, and Poczobut is still in jail. What signal are you sending to Lukashenko and Putin? Your decision is politically foolish and morally wrong. You are showing weakness in the face of Poland’s enemies! wrote Kamiński on x.com, attaching a video showing Polish officers clashing with aggressive migrants.
