Dangerous Package Found on Tracks in Lubusz Region. Authorities Investigate Who Was Behind the Provocation

The incident in Drzeńsko has once again drawn the attention of security services to the issue of railway infrastructure safety in western Poland. A suspicious package discovered on Friday near Line 273 by a PKP employee led to an immediate halt in train traffic and the intervention of counterterrorism officers and explosives specialists. Although it was later confirmed to be only a mock device, the case is being treated as a serious provocation involving critical infrastructure.

A disturbing discovery was made on the railway tracks near the village of Drzeńsko in the Lubusz Voivodeship on Friday. During a routine inspection, a PKP employee noticed an object resembling an explosive device near the embankment. In accordance with procedures, train traffic was immediately suspended on the section of Line 273 — the so-called Nadodrzanka — one of the region’s most important transport routes used for both passenger and freight services.

Gazeta Lubuska was first to report on the matter, stating that the package was found around 10:00 a.m. in the Słubice municipality. Numerous police patrols, Railway Security Service units, and specialized counterterrorism teams were dispatched to the scene. Explosives experts carried out a full technical assessment, secured the area, and ruled out the presence of any live explosives.

According to Deputy Commissioner Mateusz Sławek from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Gorzów Wielkopolski:

“It was a harmless mock explosive device, deliberately placed near the tracks.”

Although the device posed no real threat, the response from security services was immediate. Two trains — one passenger and one freight — were halted, and travelers were redirected to temporary replacement transport. PKP PLK stated that the suspension lasted around an hour, after which full capacity on the line was restored.

Police have launched an investigation into the placement of the mock device. Officers have secured CCTV footage from nearby sections of the railway, are interviewing witnesses, and are analyzing how the mock device was positioned in order to determine whether it was merely a prank or a deliberate act of provocation.

According to security services, such reports — even when involving mock devices — are treated as potential threats to critical infrastructure. In recent months, similar incidents on Poland’s railway network have been of particular interest to the Police and the Internal Security Agency (ABW) due to the risk of sabotage and attempts to destabilize transport.

Investigators emphasize that intentionally placing suspicious objects near tracks may carry criminal liability, especially if it results in the suspension of railway traffic or mobilization of specialist units. The investigation aims to clarify both the motive and the identity of the person responsible for the provocation.
