Donald Tusk announced that Poland will pay compensation to the victims of German crimes if Germany does not do so. Włodzimierz Czarzasty was asked today about these words. “You should be proud,” the politician declared.
Czarzasty on Tusk’s words: “You should be proud”
During a Monday press conference in Berlin, Donald Tusk, appearing alongside Friedrich Merz, stated that around 50,000 people harmed during the war are still alive today. He also noted that when in previous years he discussed compensation with then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the number had been close to 60,000. The Prime Minister stressed that if Germany does not present a clear and concrete position on this matter soon, then next year he will consider Poland covering the needs of these people from its own funds.
The Prime Minister’s statement was addressed today by Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty, who was asked about it by a TV Republika reporter. As expected, the leader of the New Left spoke about the Prime Minister’s words in glowing terms.
“What greater embarrassment could there be for the Germans and the German authorities if the Polish Prime Minister says: ‘You owe something to the victims of Nazism in Poland. You have brought about a situation in which, if you don’t do it, then we will probably cover these debts for you, because these people simply have no compensation,’” Czarzasty stated.
He added that journalists from TV Republika “should be proud that we have a Prime Minister who is able to present this issue in an intelligent way.”
“The only problem is that this intelligent approach was presented, but some newsrooms did not understand it,” Czarzasty remarked.
Unequal rules
At the beginning of the press conference, it was announced that each newsroom would be allowed to ask a maximum of one question. This rule was applied only to the outlet from the Free Speech Zone (Strefa Wolnego Słowa). Employees of TVN and TVP in liquidation were allowed to ask multiple questions.
