MANILA, Philippines — Consumers in the Visayas and Mindanao may face another round of brownouts on Friday as the two main islands continue to experience strained electricity supply, with the situation still blamed on outages at large coal plants.
In separate advisories, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said a red alert status would be in effect over the Visayas for seven hours, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A yellow alert would also be declared from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Mindanao, which usually injects added power to the Visayas grid, is also under a red alert for a longer period, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
It would also be under a yellow alert, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
A yellow alert indicates that available power reserves are thinning, meaning any unexpected plant outage could trigger service interruptions. A red alert indicates that the supply cannot meet the demand, raising the risk of rotational brownouts unless we manage consumption effectively.
