A strong magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental at 9:43 am on Friday, October 10.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that damage and aftershocks were expected following the earthquake.

Cebu Pacific offers free rebooking
Cebu Pacific advised passengers that its flights to and from the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City on Friday, October 10, will operate as scheduled even after the earthquake.
But the airline is also offering free rebooking and a travel fund option for passengers who want to postpone their Friday flights to and from the following destinations:
- Bohol
- Butuan
- Cagayan de Oro
- Cebu
- Davao
- General Santos
- Tacloban
Passengers can manage their booking up to two hours before their scheduled departure. Cebu Pacific also advised passengers to still check the status of their flights given that the situation is developing.

Philippine Trench caused earthquake
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology announced in a press conference on Friday, October 10, that the Philippine Trench caused the magnitude 7.4 Davao Oriental earthquake.
The Philippine Trench is one of six trenches in the country. It has a total of six segments, the most out of all the country’s trenches.
Past earthquakes in Mindanao also happened along this trench, such as a magnitude 8.3 tremor in 1924.

PCG Mindanao: Stay away from coastal areas
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) stations in Mindanao have called on to residents and tourists in coastal areas along the eastern parts of the region to stay away from beaches and shorelines.
In its October 10 sea travel advisory, Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao suspended all sea voyages within the CGDSEM Area of Responsibility until further notice.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Station in Surigao del Norte urged fishermen and small vessels not to venture out into the sea, citing Phivolcs’ tsunami warning.
