The Philippines marks the anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution on Wednesday, February 25, exactly 40 years since the ouster of dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos.
Various groups are holding rallies and other activities across the country to commemorate the peaceful revolution, including one at the People Power Monument along EDSA, led by the Trillion Peso March Movement, and another at the EDSA Shrine, organized by Bayan and other progressive groups.
The events are all set despite President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s declaration of February 25 as a special working day — not a non-working day or holiday, unlike in past administrations.

[OPINION] EDSA is a long and wide highway. No permit is required for a rally.
“EDSA 1986 was a spontaneous eruption of difference. It found common cause without asking permission. Here we are, 40 years later, told what signs to carry. We are told where to stand. We are told which sentiments are acceptable. This, on the very highway that once swallowed a million contradictions called freedom.”

Opposition figures are bickering again, this time over People Power protest actions
Factions of the Philippine opposition are fighting each other again, this time over the planned protest actions on the anniversary of People Power.
With no middle ground reached, the two groups will mount separate rallies. If they can’t unite on this, how can they unite on bigger battles, such as the 2028 polls?
Dwight de Leon reports.

[STAKEOUT] Dapat bang ulitin ang People Power Revolution?
