stated that Peru’s incorporation into the Shield of the Americas—a regional alliance promoted by the U.S. Government—will help strengthen our borders against transnational criminal organizations.

“It is support for all member countries in the region to strengthen our borders and jointly fight transnational criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking, money laundering, and human trafficking,” he indicated.

The Cabinet member said the actions of international organized crime warrant a coordinated regional response, which is what the initiative known as the Shield of the Americas seeks to achieve.

“As you know, the Shield of the Americas was just created in March, with the participation of 13 countries. The latest country to join was Colombia, and Peru will now also join,” Espa noted

“We are confident that this multilateral mechanism, with the leadership, logistical and operational support, and intelligence provided by the United States, is a support to all member countries,” he added.

Important announcements

On another matter, the Peruvian minister highlighted the visit by the U.S. senior official, which comes at a time when the two main concerns for most Peruvians are the fight against citizen insecurity and transnational criminal organizations, as well as the response to El Niño phenomenon.

“They are the two major priorities we have at this time, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio is coming to make important announcements on U.S. support for Peru on these two issues,” Espa expressed.

Upon his arrival in Peru, the U.S. government representative was also received by U.S. Ambassador to Peru Bernie Navarro.

Secretary Rubio is scheduled to meet with President Keiko Fujimori this Thursday.
