Peru’s 2026 Elections: JNE forms expert committee to strengthen runoff process | Noticias

announced on Sunday the formation of an academic committee of experts and electoral support specialists ahead of the presidential runoff scheduled for June 7, following the official proclamation of the two candidates who remain in the electoral race.

During a press conference, Burneo stressed the measure aims to reinforce electoral procedures and strengthen the electoral system’s institutional framework.

“This team aims to verify, assess, and strengthen the procedures and tools used during the election ahead of the runoff,” Burneo said.

He explained that the committee is made up of national and international specialists in cybersecurity, technological innovation, auditing, and electoral matters.

They will accompany the process by issuing observations and recommendations simultaneously “with the aim of ensuring that this runoff is conducted transparently.”

Electoral oversight

At another point, the JNE head reported that pre-election oversight at polling places will be reinforced. He added that more than 2,500 contingency electoral monitors will be deployed to supervise the electoral process’ development.

Regarding the objections raised following the first round, the JNE chairman stated that all complaints and requests were evaluated in accordance with the law.

“There were no elements supporting the annulment of the process or the holding of complementary elections,” he added.

Likewise, Burneo reported that the JNE had received more than 46,000 requests for electoral exemptions as of April 29 due to reasons such as travel, illness, and work-related impediments, among others.

The JNE head said this situation shows that electoral absenteeism has multiple causes and does not respond solely to delays in the installation of polling tables.

Presidential debate

The JNE chairman also reported that the dates and conditions for the presidential debate will be coordinated starting Monday, May 18, with the two political organizations that will participate in the runoff.

He indicated that the electoral body will propose dates, as well as evaluate logistical and venue-related aspects.
